Move over, CBD:
It’s time for other cannabinoids to shine!
While CBD is great and all, it’s far from the only amazing cannabinoid found in hemp. A formerly-overlooked cannabinoid, CBG, is quickly rising to prominence thanks to its unique set of health benefits.
Keep reading to learn what CBG is, what it does, and how to make it work for you.
WHAT IS CBG?
CBG, or cannabigerol, is a cannabinoid that’s produced by the cannabis plant family.
CBG’s classification also hints at its ability to bind to our endocannabinoid system’s receptors. That means good things for anyone who wants to optimize their inner balance.
CBG, just like virtually every other cannabinoid that starts with the letter C, is non-psychotropic. That just means it doesn’t get you high or induce feelings of euphoria. Instead, CBG works behind the scenes by gently reducing stress.
WHERE DOES CBD COME FROM?
While virtually any hemp plant will contain small amounts of CBG or CBGa, there’s one especially good source: young hemp.
That’s because CBG is the “mother cannabinoid” — aka the precursor — from which all other cannabinoids come. A young hemp plant won’t have much CBD yet. What it will have is tons of CBG, just waiting to be converted! Some botanical experts believe that our ancestors ingested CBG simply by eating the occasional hemp leaf.
In modern times, CBG sourcing is different. Most CBG today is not harvested from young plants. Instead, it’s just extracted and distilled down from fully grown ones. Expect CBG-specific hemp cultivars to become more popular in the not-so-distant future.
WHAT IS CBG OIL?
CBG oil is to CBG what CBD oil is to CBD. It’s just a hemp-derived oil or extract based around CBG.
CBG oil looks, tastes, and smells very similar to the CBD oil you might’ve gotten accustomed to. It might feel similar, too, though some users say that CBG is more calming. After all, CBG does have some unique benefits of its own. Let’s take a look at those next.
HOW DOES CBG WORK?
CBG works by binding to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), where it’s thought to strengthen the function of anandamide – a neurotransmitter that plays a role in enhancing pleasure and motivation, regulates appetite and sleep, and alleviate pain. Similar to CBD, and unlike THC, CBG is non-psychoactive, so its use, will not cause you to experience a “high”.
WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF CBG?
Like CBD and other minor cannabinoids, CBG is suggested to contain some of the same therapeutic benefits. While more research is needed to determine its full benefits, some believe, CBG contains promising potential.
Preliminary research have shown potential benefits
The CBG research we have available shows very clearly that it may reduce certain inflammatory markers. In fact, CBG may be both an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant.
CBG may also be uniquely helpful for those who have eye problems like glaucoma. In this area, it stands alone: CBD doesn’t have the same effect.
Finally, research shows that CBG may be antimicrobial/antibacterial. “CBG proved to be marvelous at tackling pathogenic bacteria,” confirmed a recent study’s research lead. “The findings suggest real therapeutic potential for cannabinoids as antibiotics.”
CBG FINAL THOUGHTS
As promising as all this may sound, keep in mind that our collective knowledge of CBG is still in its infancy. More research is needed before we can really understand CBG’s potential. So is a more real-life experience!
The best way to experience CBG, for now, is simply by taking it via premium full-spectrum CBD products. These products often contain enough CBG to really add up over time.
